Spoken Word – You Heard It First on the Fringe

PRESS RELEASE 10th June 2013

For immediate release

Whether it's comic poetry from John Hegley at the Litton Poetry Festival or Latin American romance at Buxton's Railway pub, there is an exciting and eclectic range of performances for every mood in the Spoken Word category at the Fringe.

Hegley is just one of the speakers at the smallest ever poetry festival taking place in nearby Litton. Supported by Derbyshire Arts, the event includes poems on trees, a poetry grand slam, flying balloon poems, walking and poetry, poetry in a phone box, and tea and cake at the village shop.

The only Brazilian-born storyteller in the UK, Ana Maria Lines in collaboration with Midlands/Mexican troubadour Mike Payton, performs Souvenirs, a blend of world tales with salsa, tango, bolero and song in a show at The Railway that is exciting, passionate, thought-provoking and romantic.

The international flavour continues as storyteller Steve Bellwood returns from the US to revive his North country roots, delivering lively and imaginative musings on mortality and time-travel in When The Old Man Died at the atmospheric Underground Venues. At The Source café, where profits support grass roots projects in rural South Africa, The Matlock Storytelling Cafe bring storytelling back to adult audiences with their diverse and entertaining tales.

Award winner Mark Gwynne Jones offers wit and wisdom with his funny and thought-provoking show, Just For A Moment, combining comedy, poetry and film, and described by The Guardian as 'Inspired'. Meanwhile Jim Higo's raging show of biting wit, wry humour, blatant vulgarity and social conscience, That's Not How You Spell Pedantic, explores the trivialities and irritations of modern life. There is further excitement and some serious word-wrestling at Word Wizards' Revenge of the Sixth, a fiery Open Poetry Slam at the Buckingham Hotel.

In quieter mode, ICV Newton's talk and photography exhibition in the Talbot room at the historic Old Hall Hotel explores whether photography is art or technical craft. The Old Hall is also the location for a real tradition, free Fringe Readings - the perfect antidote to the hectic pace of the Buxton Fringe!

The Fringe is hugely grateful to its many supporters including its main sponsor The University of Derby Buxton as well as The Osborne Group, High Peak Borough Council, The Old Hall Hotel and The Cavendish Shopping Arcade.
