This year’s Buxton Fringe offers a wealth of entertainment for fans of the guitar as a number of acclaimed guitarists make a welcome return.
Previous award winner, Jon Pickard, offers a rare opportunity to experience and learn about the Harp- guitar in Concert, while Kenny Robertson presents Strung Out! A History of Rock Guitar, a lively musical journey through the decades supported by a three-piece band. Putting things in context, Rik Roberts offers The Guitar and Its Cousins, showcasing the top three instruments that “go pluck” - guitar, ukulele and banjo. There are several opportunities to see Classical Guitar by Jonathan Prag as well as Jonathan with Dom Prag in their Classical/folk Crossover Show. Dom also has his own folk performances at the United Reform Church.
There is a sparkling range of music from the string ‘section’ of this year’s Fringe. Mr Simpson’s Little Consort returns to the Fringe with All in a Garden Green at Eyam Parish Church, with readings and music from the 17th century including possibly the first performance by viols and voice of Charles Butler’s Bees Madrigal from The Feminine Monarchie of 1623. Award-winning early music ensemble Partita is also back with their Early Music Concert at Buxton Methodist Church. The High Peak Orchestra offers a varied classical programme at St John’s Church whilst on a somewhat smaller scale, the Keld Ensemble of fifteen players bring two performances: Bach’s Double Violin Concerto in the historic surroundings of the Pump Room and Baroque and Classical String Ensemble at Eyam Parish Church. The Fringe also offers the intimacy of the Bright Quartet’s Ravel Plus at the United Reformed Church and two linked classical concert performances from Henrietta Hill and Friends: Music of Water & Stone at the Green Man Gallery.
