Theatre’s bright young things at Buxton Fringe

PRESS RELEASE for immediate release June 2nd 2022

A host of talented young performers will be treading the boards as part of Buxton Fringe’s theatre programme this July.

Last year’s Youth Theatre award winners REC Youth Theatre Company are taking on John Wyndham’s sci-fi classic, The Chrysalids, at Underground Venues. In a post-apocalyptic society dedicated to absolute conformity, those who aren't born perfect, are mutant outcasts. In a small, pious town, a group of children discover they have a powerful and dangerous gift. Fearing discovery and betrayal, they escape into the forbidden Fringes.

Also at Underground is [Blank] by Alice Birch marking the welcome return of the students of Shadow Syndicate after a couple of years’ absence. Uncompromising, hard-hitting and visceral, this eye- opening play explores the acute impact the criminal justice system has on both adults and children, exposing pain, anger and fragility in equal measure.

REC Youth Theatre’s younger companies also return. The Juniors are at St Thomas More school presenting The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. As they go through the wardrobe, a magical adventure awaits: Narnia, where it’s always winter but never Christmas. Will Aslan return, and will the White Witch be defeated? Over at St Anne’s Community Centre, it’s the start of a new year and everyone is looking forward to the Wolf Moon, but this year is different, this year the moon has disappeared! Fringe-goers are invited to come along and help the Young REC-ers solve the mystery in this new original play by local writer/musician Clare O'Neill. Fringe marketing officer Stephanie Billen says: “It is always so exciting to see new actors coming up through the ranks and the well-established younger companies that perform at the Fringe can be relied upon to offer rich and stimulating productions.”

Further theatre treats can be discovered on www.buxtonfringe.org.uk and on the free to download Buxton Fringe App.

The Fringe wishes to thank High Peak Borough Council, its Fringe Friends and the town’s many Fringe supporters and venues.
