Buxton Fringe looks forward to summer of fun!

PRESS RELEASE for immediate release January 27th 2023

Buxton Fringe is looking forward to a summer of fun with a host of early entries already signed up for this popular, open-access festival which runs from July 5-23.

One of the biggest UK Fringes between Edinburgh and Brighton, the Fringe runs in parallel with the prestigious Buxton International Festival and last year celebrated a healthy 171 events and a 110% ticket sales rise on the Covid-affected previous year.

A beautiful spa town, Buxton is surrounded by the hills of the Peak District in the heart of England in easy reach of Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent and Sheffield. It is currently riding high following the redevelopment of the Grade 1 listed Crescent as the 5-star Ensana Buxton Crescent Hotel and the announcement that after nine years splitting the festival between Buxton and Harrogate, the 29th International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival will take place exclusively in Buxton from Saturday 29 July to Saturday 12 August 2023. With BIF, the Fringe and G&S, Buxton is more than ever a festival town.

This year all three managed venues are taking part in the Fringe: The Green Man Gallery, the Rotunda and Underground at the Clubhouse with the Arts Centre Studio. Other venues include the United Reformed Church, Buxton’s magnificent Crescent and unusual locations such as the Serpentine Community Garden, the historic Pump Room and, out of town, Eyam Parish Church.

Comedy, Music and Theatre are generally the biggest categories. Highlights so far include award-winning punster Richard Pulsford and comic storyteller Mike Venables in Comedy, Triple Buxton Fringe award-winner Egriega with music and mime, an Emily Dickinson-inspired art song recital from Adrienne Lyne and Stephenie Leung, acclaimed singer Annette Gregory, early music group Mr Simpson’s Little Consort and award-winning Ordsall A Cappella Singers. Early theatre entries include the ever popular Library Theatre Touring Company with Alan Bennett’s A Lady of Letters and Strange Fish’s St Nicholas, featuring Nick Danan, a memorable Fringe award winner for his Macbeth performance in Buxton in 2011.

Other eagerly anticipated categories include Visual Arts, Spoken Word and Children’s Events with the Fringe renowned for its incredibly diverse programme of shows and happenings.

The closing date for entries to the printed programme is April 16. In the meantime listings can be seen as they come in on https://buxtonfringe.org.uk/programme.php and on the free to download Buxton Fringe App. During the Fringe, the Fringe Information Desk in the Pavilion Gardens Conservatory will be open every day.

The Fringe will also offer its traditional free showcase of events, Fringe Sunday, at the Pavilion Gardens on July 9th as well as busking outside the Fringe Desk, a new Fringe on Fridays outdoor performance slot and its ever-popular Fringe & BIF float as part of the town’s carnival..

Fringe chair Stephen Walker says: “Buxton Fringe is one of the friendliest festivals for both audiences and performers and we look forward to sharing an abundance of exciting work across all genres this summer.”
