Programme Cover 2021

Buxton Festival Fringe is holding a competition open to professional and non-professional artists to design a piece of artwork for the cover of the Fringe's printed programme for 2022! The deadline is January 10th 2022! Thousands of programmes will be printed. The winning artwork will also be publicised on the Fringe website, on the Fringe flyer, on Fringe social media, on advertising/marketing materials and in the press. There will be a £100 prize for the winner who will be fully credited in publicity.

Buxton Festival Fringe is a vibrant, open-access arts festival running in parallel with Buxton International Festival. It celebrated its 40th Fringe in 2019 and regularly hosts a huge range of entertainment across the town and beyond in categories of theatre, music, comedy, visual arts, dance, film, street theatre, children's events, spoken word and more.

Please read on for further information. If you have any further questions do please send a message to Marketing.

IMAGE INFORMATION

The winning entry will be bold and eye-catching, showcasing the distinctive style of the artist whilst conveying the spirit of the Fringe.

There is no restriction on the use of colour but competitors should bear in mind that the banner on the side of the template has an orange background and that this is the brand colour for the Fringe. Many of our most successful designs have featured some reference to this colour in the artwork (for the technically minded, the orange is Pantone 158C. CMYK is: C: 0% M:  61% Y: 97% K: 0%)

Past covers have incorporated the logo of our sponsor at the time but this is no longer required.

Sample artwork and template

The images must be submitted as follows:

Size:
158mm (Width) x 155mm (Height)
The proportions of the template must be adhered to when submitting the image. Please see template, right.
Format:
.jpeg or .pdf (High resolution, at least 300dpi)

SUBJECT MATTER

We want our artists to have full freedom of expression. However here are some useful pointers:

DO try to include some visual reference to Buxton Fringe in your artwork.

DO consider including some orange in your design though no need to go overboard!

DO try to convey something positive about the Buxton Fringe eg its friendliness, talented performers, community spirit, accessibility, diversity of entertainment, beautiful venues, natural surroudings etc

DON'T repeat information that is already in our cover banner.

DON'T put all your focus on something not very associated with the Fringe eg The Opera House is not a Fringe venue and our Information Desk is no longer next door to it.

DON'T feel constrained - sometimes an abstract composition conveys everything it needs to.

For inspiration, have a look at all our past covers.

MEDIUM

Original artwork may be in any medium including photography but must be submitted as a digital file. Note that the exact reproduction of your artwork may be slightly altered during the printing process and we will not be held responsible for this. The programme designer may also wish to alter or crop your image, in which case you will be consulted.
