Sex, Smells and Spells at Buxton Festival Fringe

Ever wanted to talk to an ant or chat up a moth? The Spoken Word section of Buxton Festival Fringe (July 8-24) is even more arresting than usual this year.

New to the Fringe is Sexy Science Inc presenting The Dr Jones Show: Sex, Flies and Smelly Sticky Tape. This extraordinary show offers a masterclass in ant-speak amongst other things.

There's also a chilling true tale of greed and passion from Freefall Storytelling and the welcome return of poet and pianist F. Philip Holland as well as the ever popular, and free, Fringe Readings. You will also find some electrifying beat poetry listed in the Music section.

Some of the Fringe's most exciting events end up in the catch-all Other Events section. It is fantastic to see the return of close-up magic on the Fringe with sell-out Fringe 2002 award winners, Order of the Magi. Long-established Fringe regular, Johnny Dagger is also back with his atmospheric King Sterndale Slides with Music.

Not all Fringe events are about bums on seats. Jennie Ainsworth would like you to join her on a walk to discover Vera Brittain's Buxton, while Fringe Heritage Tours is again offering its eye-opening behind-the-scenes tours of the Crescent, perhaps for the last time pending the building's redevelopment. All proceeds for these popular tours go to the Fringe.

If you think you know Poole's Cavern, think again. As part of this year's Fringe, there is a chance to tour it in candle-light and hear some evocative past poetry and prose.

The Fringe is all about being creative so do join in Expo Arts' creative workshops exploring drawing, collage, patchwork and clay in the informal Garden Studio. Kids' and adult sessions are available.

For a taster of the Fringe and all its treats, join us at Fringe Sunday, a free, open-air concert at the Pavilion Gardens on July 10.
