Comedy Blasts Off at Buxton Festival Fringe

Press Release - 18 June 2010

Never mind Edinburgh, see it in Buxton first as the Fringe continues to bring the best in up-and-coming comedy talent to the town, with Underground Venues (beneath the Old Hall Hotel) firmly established as the home of comedy during the Buxton Fringe.

Previous Buxton Fringe comedy award winners return in the shape of Helen Keen (presenting a new version of her hit It Is Rocket Science! soon to be recorded for Radio 4), Dr Johnny Façade offering pseudo-science comedy and magic in The Man Who Cannot Lose and comedy dragon Piff with his eagerly awaited sequel Piff-tacular 2.

There's stand-up from XS Malarkey Comedian of the Year Roland Gent, Andrew O'Neill, Stockport's 'back-garden farmer of the year' Crozzy, Elis James (hailed by TimeOut as 'a complete joy'), Gary Delaney, Henry Paker, Gerry Howell (described as 'a one-man Mighty Boosh'), James Sherwood (star of Radio 4's Vote Now Show), Phil Buckley, 'fablemonger' Kent Valentine, Mark Allen, Max & Ivan, as well as regular comedy nights at Barrel of Laughs. And there's sketch comedy from The Noise Next Door, TeakShow, The Alternative Review Show and The So Be It Union.

Comedy might even save your life: check out After Dark's lecture on How To Survive a Zombie Apocalypse!

But Underground Venues isn't the only place for comedy at the Fringe, with new venues providing the home for other shows around Buxton. Nat's Kitchen plays host to the sketch comedy of The Bright & Shiny Radio Show (watch out for an exploding budgie!), the Prince of Wales boasts Manchester sketch troupe Kooky Babooshka and St Mary's Church is the venue for Joe Orton's saucy The Erpingham Camp.

This year's Buxton Festival Fringe runs from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 25 July and details of all events are available online at http://www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or in the widely available free printed programme.

The Fringe is hugely grateful to its many supporters including its main sponsor The University of Derby Buxton as well as The Osborne Group, High Peak Borough Council and The Old Hall Hotel.
