Why the Festival does not have all the best tunes

Press Release - 18 June 2010

At the Buxton Festival Fringe, music events of the highest quality complement those taking place in the Buxton Festival itself, with events covering a wide range of styles and instruments.

Classical music is represented by stirring orchestral concerts from the likes of High Peak Orchestra, the Amaretti Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble MDCX (celebrating 400 years of Monteverdi's Vespers), as well as smaller groups such as Bright String Trio, Fordante, Bright Cecilia (performing 'Forbidden Sacred' early music in the exciting acoustic of Poole's Cavern), the Jager Brass Quintet and Partita. Many of the concerts specialise in specific instrumental works, whether it's solo piano from Jonathan Ellis, or piano duets from Emma Souza Lima & Diva Evelyn Reale, harp from Liath Hollins & Kathryn Lewis, cello and vocals from Selfmade Music or the Manchester Recorder Orchestra. Welcome youthful talent comes with the Derbyshire City & County Youth Orchestra.

Operatic and vocal works also come to the fore in a wide range of concerts and recitals. There's a full concert performance of Carmen from City of Manchester Opera, the return of 'Africa's Lady of Song' Margaret Ferguson, who wowed audiences last year, and choral works from Ordsall Acapella Singers and Tideswell Male Voice Choir.

But it's not just classical music on display at this year's Fringe. You can find jazz and blues from local performer Gill Sweeting & Not The Blue Cheese Tarts, guitar and performance poetry from Hayden Cohen and a tribute to Jake Thackray. Jazz and dinner make an irresistible combo from Ian Miller & Dominic Spencer. Listen out too for contemporary singer-songwriter Sophia, reflective singer Anne L Ryan, songs and stories from The Tallyman's Dark Omnibus and the return of Fringe favourites Project Adorno, Sam Dunkley and the Fringe Award-winning Katus performing in Poole's Cavern as well as the Marquee there.

To top it all there is also a special concert from newcomers to the Fringe, Burbage Primary School, with their own take on Jack and the Beanstalk and that mainstay of primary schools everywhere, Frere Jacques

This year's Buxton Festival Fringe runs from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 25 July and details of all events are available online at http://www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or in the widely available free printed programme.

The Fringe is hugely grateful to its many supporters including its main sponsor The University of Derby Buxton as well as The Osborne Group, High Peak Borough Council and The Old Hall Hotel.
