Award-winning Family Entertainment at Buxton Festival Fringe

Press Release for immediate release 9th June 2011

Buxton Festival Fringe has always prided itself on its entertainment for families and this year's programme boasts an unrivalled collection of shows for the younger audience, many with a string of awards behind them.

Last year's Fringe winner of Best New Writing, The Clock Master returns with its extraordinarily inventive show of magic and music boxes, as does the twice award-winning company Little Pixie Productions, this time with Granny's Big Top Tale in which Granny and Ruby enjoy high jinx at the circus! Local youth theatre group the Young Rec Drama School present action-packed space adventure Lunar Tics, while award-winning, Bakewell-based theatre company Babbling Vagabonds bring their unique story-telling and puppetry skills to The Buried Moon. Catfoot Theatre Company present their adaptation of Smarties Book Prize winner Cowboy Baby, yes sirree!, and there's an adaptation of classic fairytale The Enormous Turnip featuring comedy, songs and plenty of audience participation from little GIANT productions.

As well as these theatrical shows, there is a celebration of poetry for children in Our Little Green Book of Children's Verse, a trip through time at Buxton Museum & Art Gallery and a special workshop involving making tiny pirates to terrorise the Pavilion Gardens!

Parents will find plenty else of interest apart from those events which specifically come under the For Families category. Look out for the smiley face symbol against all those shows in the programme that performers have designated generally suitable for family viewing.

Fringe chair Stephanie Billen adds: 'Fringe artist Gaye Chorlton has been working with local schools and groups to help create decorated panels for a special 'giant fringe' to go on the Pavilion Gardens bandstand on Fringe Sunday so I hope all those children will come and see the finished product in the gardens on July 10th from 2pm. We'd also love families to give us the orange Fringe float a wave at the Carnival on July 16. And don't forget, you can pick up a free Fringe balloon any time at the Fringe desk next to the Opera House. See you there!'
