Singular comedy entertainment at Buxton Fringe

PRESS RELEASE for immediate release May 2025

One-person shows often make up the backbone of the Buxton Fringe. This year’s bumper comedy section features talented individuals offering everything from the purely pensive to the simply outrageous. There is also a chance to witness exciting comedy partnerships.

Playing on words is a comic staple and features heavily. Kevin O’Brien’s ABC of one-liner jokes takes audiences on a one-hour alphabetical journey. Denzil De Cristo tells jokes about robots, relationships and religion as an Artificially Intelligent Procrastinating Pundit, and last year’s Buxton Fringe stand up award winner, Maura Jackson, tells us how to unwind in Me Time: The Feather Fixer. Samantha Day is ready to explore whine o’clock in The Great British Menu (Of Petty Complaints)

Dave Bibby needs help. He is trapped in his latest comedy show, Hasta La Vista…Bibby! Nathan Cassidy may also need help as his new show Piracy reveals how he has stolen jokes from others. Fringe regular Nathan also delivers a hilarious stand up hour in Nathan Cassidy: It’s Not The End of The World.

Philip Simon wraps one-liners around spontaneous chat in Shall I Compere Thee In A Funny Way? And joke machine Richard Pulsford entertains with a show packed full of one-liners and puns in The Short Joke Teller Returns. Will BF: Moon Team IIIV is meanwhile offering a sketch comedy odyssey like nothing you have seen before - unless you saw their show last year…

Observing the world around us is comic gold dust. There is the usual (and usually sold-out) glorious nonsense from comedian and Upstart Crow actor Rob Rouse and Radio 4 regular Tom Wrigglesworth with a live version of the podcast, The Unlikely Weightlifters, at Underground at the Working Men’s Club. Also performing with Underground but at its Spring Gardens site, sketch comics Will and Noah definitely spend Too Much Time On Their Phones. They say their attention span is so short they can’t even get to the end of a…

Dreamshed Theatre’s Writers’ Block meanwhile allows us behind the scenes as two actors try to capitalise on their longevity with a comeback show devoid of comedy stereotypes.

Fringe Chair Ian Bowns says: “In my first year as Chair of Buxton Festival Fringe I am amazed at the sheer variety of shows on offer. Underground is celebrating 20 years at Buxton Fringe and continues to bring fantastic comedy but there is also a stand up comedy weekend at the Lee Wood Hotel on the 19th and 20th July plus shows at the Beer & Bean Cafe Bar and elsewhere. 2025 really is comedy gold!”

There is plenty more comedy on offer at Buxton Fringe. Fringe-goers should pick up a free printed programme, see www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or download the free Buxton Fringe App.

The Fringe wishes to thank High Peak Borough Council, its Fringe Friends and the town’s many Fringe supporters and venues.
